BEING μόνος

Those who live in unity in such a way that they form but one person are rightly called “μόνος”.

Sermon on Psalm 132, 6

In order to promote deep communion of mind and heart among the friars in community, we should be mindful that our personal relationships require the same qualities that are needed in all genuine human relationships. Sincere communication is an essential human factor that can strengthen fraternal life in community.

 Const.110

Augustinian life presents on the first place the duty of making from the different individual, different longings, souls, desires and hearts, just one. The word one (μόνος - μοναχος - monk) is used not because the person lives isolated, not even because he or she has achieved a certain level of balance and unity between his or her passions and will. The person is μόνος / monk insofar he is making himself one with the other members in the community; insofar the many became just one.

On the light of the commentary to psalm 132 Augustinian communities, in which diversity comes into unity, offer a light of hope to a world where diversity hurts becoming division.

Do people sees us as individual friars or as one community?

Do other people see us Augustinians as individual friars or as one community ? I think the best way to answer that question would be just to ask people to whom we work and/or minister.

Maybe we should ask ourselves how we see ourselves - as individuals working to serve the Church or as a community of one mind and one heart growing in our knowledge of one another and of God.

I believe that many people see us more as individuals working for the Church than as a community of men growing in our faith. I think part of that comes from living in a society that emphasizes the individual too much. It also comes from the style of ministry we subscribe to. Working in parochial ministry, it becomes easy to fall into a "diocesan" model of excessive individualism. This mindset can be avoided but it takes much effort. Plus unity within our communities must be seen as more than just praying, eating and working together. We should also do things together as a community other than work or pray or eat. Enjoying one another's company and recreating together would go a long way towards fostering unity within our communities. As I see it, we're too work oriented. We work too much and don't "play" enough especially with one another.

Religion is the guide to lead a decent and meaningful life on the earth. It adds the definition of a peaceful life and peaceful co-existence among the people. It is sad to see that the people are ignorant of this and wage war in the name of religion. I hope people will understand this and follow the righteous path.

Woah! I'm really loving the template/theme of this website. It's simple, yet effective. A lot of times it's very hard to get that "perfect balance" between superb usability and visual appearance. I must say that you've done a excellent job with this. Additionally, the blog loads super quick for me on Internet explorer. Outstanding Blog!
